Biological Information
Background Information:
Monoamine Oxidase (MAO, E.C.1.4.3.4) catalyzes the removal of an amine group from a variety of substrates including endogenous substances (norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, tyramine, 5-hydroxytryptamine) and many drugs that are amines. MAO functions as an important protective mechanism against exogenous, biologically active amines. There are at least two types of MAO which display dissimilar preferences for substrates and differential sensitivities to selective inhibitors.
